Deck Ledger Board and Cedar Shingles

Shingles are attached in a triple fashion. How do I cut the shingles with a circular saw to attach the ledger without hitting the nails that can not be seen from the outside?

Solon,

Welcome to DoItYourself.com and the Deck forum.

Make the deck freestanding!!! There's no good reason to mess with the siding on the house, ESPECIALLY when you have cedar shingle siding.

How far from the house do you have the free standing deck?

kildron,

About an inch!!

The issue is do you cut into the siding of the house, which creates the potential for leaks, or just let the deck be free-standing -- therefore NO potential for leaks, and solon doesn't have to worry about destroying several $7 saw blades because of the nails.
