Porch question?
The wrap around porch on our 134 year old victorian home has 6 round support posts about 12" in diameter.
The footings and post caps (for lack of a better word) are showing water damage.
I was wondering if anyone has heard of metal or fiberglass covers that might be made to fit over the existing footings and caps, to make a neater appearance instead of supporting the porch roof and removing the posts to replace them.
Any other suggestions are surely welcome and appreciated.
Regards

Our church had a similar issue, though the posts were load-bearing when they should have been decorative with center support. We installed steel posts in the center of the hollow wood posts to bear the load. The capitals and footers were repaired with Bondo - the same stuff used in auto-body repair. If the actual posts are in good shape, you might consider putting a treated 6x6 to bear the weight and refurb the top and bottom. Take each post down, thread the 6x6 through and stand it back in place. The Bondo has held up fairly well.
They do make replacement decorative posts that can be wrapped around a supporting post. What you have now would go away completely. Powder-coated aluminum as I recall.
