Question Ipe deck - keeping the natural color

I'm considering an ipe deck with the biscuit fasteners. Also ipe posts and rails with Decorators balusters. My main concern is how to keep the natural brown color of the ipe wood. I'm told that a sealer with UV protection will keep the natural color. Does this really work? How hard is it to do this every year? Is there allot of prep work before you seal each year?

I also have an IPE deck with the biscuit fasteners. My contractor used Messmers for Hardwoods stain. It's been on a year so far, and looks almost like the day it was put on, except in some very high traffic areas. I'd imagine needing to re-stain every 2 or 3 years on the deckboards and probably less often on the railing. There wasn't too much prep work to do other than sanding any spots that needed it.

Depends on sunshine

My Ipe deck is south facing and it needs a new UV coat annually. I have been using Messmers.

Prep has been quite easy - Just a quick sweep and wash.

Always make sure that you wipe off excess sealer.

To get maximum protection and life from a sealer, it must penetrate the wood. IPE is way hard to a sealer to penetrate, so give it a little help. If the IPE you buy is been sitting in the yard very long, it might be darkened or starting to gray. Opening the pores by light sanding will help. Even relatively new wood can benefit from wiping off with lacquer thinner to remove some of the natural resins from the surface and give better adhesion.

Yes, wipe off excess after drying about an hrs. Leaving it on or putting on too thick will leave it sticky. Do not appy more than one coat, it will not do anything but get sticky.
