screw spacing for deck

screw spacing for deck

I am building a deck and using 5/4 x6 P.T. wood for the top deck. What is the reccomended spacing for the screws.How close to the edge of these boards should the screws be placed.Using 2 1/2 " screws. these will be screwed on 2x6 floor jouist that are on 16" centers. Thanks for any help. tom

Tom: I wouldn't allow my screws to get any closer than about an inch to the edge of the 5/4. Visually, I divide the board in half, and in half again, and use these as screw holes. It comes with practice.

Thanks Larry If i understand you correctly you are saying to use 3 screws to a board? 1 in the center and 1 in the other 2 1/2's ? Tom

No, I'm sure that what Larry is saying is to use just 2 screws at each joist, each about 1-1/4" in from the edge of the board -- no closer than 1". Using 3 is a waste of time, a waste of screws, and will actually weaking the board.
