finish for wood deck
We are planning to build a deck soon. The dry, intense heat of SE Arizona is extremely hard on wood. Is there a wood finish that will help the wood stand up to the climate? Latex? oil base? We used spar varnish on some wooden benches and that lasted about 2 years.

If you choose to go with a wood deck, then stay with the stains and sealers that have proven that they will hold up for a couple of years. The list, at least in my experience, is fairly short. Sikkens, SuperDeck, Wolmans, ...
Expect to pay about $30/gal. for it, and expect to have to redo it every year for the first 3 or 4 years and, if you're lucky, every couple of years after that.
But why wood? A good composite will last longer, and you don't have all the maintenance, and the TIME and EXPENSE of that maintenance.
