oil-base vs water-base deck sealer

What is the advantage of one over the other? Also, any recommendations for a particular brand of sealer? I want to use a natural clear sealer.

I am looking for the same information.

 

I don't know that you will find any clear or transparent stains in latex. IMO the waterborne sealers work as well as the oil base.

 

I'm in a tough environment for decks here

Most "sealers" tend not to do so well at all
I'd recommend a "stain"

I'm lucky to get a year out of latex stain/sealer
A good oil stain I can get three years plus no problem

Personally I can recommend Cabots for Clear*/Opaque, and Sikkens for solid color stains

*Cabots clear has an ever-so-slight brown/gold tint that actually helps enhance the beauty of wood, but I wanted to mention it's not crystal clear

I'm sure most of the ones by Ben Moore, Flood, and Sherwin Williams are good
I know pros who use them

But the Thompson's, which SW owns, Olympic, and Behr are three that I have used and I cannot recommend

 

Flood's CFW is IMO one of the best looking coatings to use on wood but sadly [at least in the S.E.] it doesn't hold up well in sun and rain [especially sun]. I have CWF on portions of my house and where it is protected from weather it lasts for 8-10 yrs but my back porch steps need recoating every year.

 

i stained my new treated wood porch after waiting one full year last summer.i used wholmanns water base stain i purchased at menards. the floor needs stained again.it didnt soak in at all.maybe the latax wont soak in,i dont know. maybe i should have used oil base. the can says three years. i expected at least 2 years. am i expecting two much?
