clearance for arbor/pergola

At what height should the clearance be for the headers or beams on an arbor or pergola over my existing patio with and outdoor ceiling fan? The arbor/pergola will be 13'x13' and the headers or beams are 2''x8'' and the joists or rafters will be 2''x6'' with 2x2 slats on top of those. I was thinking the bottom of the headers should be no lower than 8 or 8.5'. Much help would be appreciated. The outdoor ceiling fan will be boxed in between the 2x6's, 8" above the headers. Thanks

In my opinion, 8.5' would be a bare minimum and more would be much better.

Inside a house, people expect or put up with a 8' or 9' ceiling, but outside it may be too confining. The extra cost is not much since you are not finishing walls and setting heights for the rest of the house. - Make it open!
