wooden rocker
Hi
I bought a brand new rocker for my porch and I put 1 coat of polyuretane on it. It was the rub on kind. About a week later I was going to put another coat & now the rocker is partcially black in color. I'm guessing because of heat & rain, although its under roof. Do I use a stripper remover? Will the original color come back? I think its Oak. Also, what should I use on it next time? Stain or what? We live down south in Louisiana. I don't understand why it got so discolored.
Thanks!

I'm not a expert in this area, but if the black areas are spotted, it might be mildew. A bleach solution is needed to kill the mildew spores.
All of the polyurathane finishes that I have used require multiple coats. I have had much better luck with the solvent based polyurathanes then the water based products.

You might try a bleach/water solution on a small area but 1 week is awfully quick for mildew to show up - rinse well! You will probably need to sand to get to fresh clean wood.
I've never used any wipe on poly but would be leary of it's protection qualitys because of the thin coating film. I'd recommend using a spar urathane that you brush on, 2-3 coats.

The problem is tannin acid, not mildew. Like Larry said, it should have never been exposed to the weather. You're not going to get rid of the black.
Find a place indoors for that rocker, and paint it.
If you want a rocker on the deck (outside), get one made of something like teak or redwood, and seal it before you put it outdoors.

for what it's worth
I have an oak porch swing on my covered front porch. It's been there 8-10 yrs. I originally finished it with minwax helmsman spar urathane - 3 coats. Every few years I clean it, sand and apply another coat of spar urathane. While it no longer looks new, it still looks good.

As Lefty indicated, tannic acid is prevalent in oak. That is why good wine and whiskey are aged in oak barrels. The barrels are charred first to release the tannin and once the liquid is placed in the barrels and aged, the acid is leached into the liquid giving off a woody flavor. I use 15 gallon stainless beer kegs, but use oak chips in my primary fermentation.
