adding arbor to existing deck

I have a large deck, about 18" high covering a good portion of the back yard, and I want to add some ornamental arbor elements to it, some posts with cross beams forming a framework around an eating area. How do I attach the vertical posts (probably 5"x5" posts) to the deck, without having to cut out the deck and secure the posts into the ground, a real pain. Is there some sort of metal brace or sleeve that attaches to the deck and the posts?

mmaxted,

Welcome to DoItYourself.com and the deck forum.

Do you have any installation instructions or engineering that comes with the arbor that shows how to attach it to the deck??

Don't expect attaching it to the deck boards to be sufficient enough to keep the arbor standing in a wind. You MAY be able to attach it to the framing of the deck, provided the arbor mfgr. tells you how.

Otherwise, go through the deck with the arbor posts and attach them in the dirt.

Attaching it to the deck improperly will not only allow the arbor to blow down in a strong wind but it will also tear up your deck.
