Question Removing outdoor carpet from porch and steps

I have a small front porch with 3 steps and then a 4 step staircase out my back door all covered with the disgusting outdoor green carpet. Everytime it rains, it gets wet and mushy and I would like to remove it but am afraid of what I will find underneath or that I will only be able to remove part of it depending upon what they used to put it down with. I have only lived here a year and I know it has been down awhile. Any ideas on where to start???

A utility knife can be used to cut strips and sections. Start pulling up strips in middle. With luck the adhesive was just applied to the edges. Once carpet is off, use De-Solv-It or other adhesive remover to remove adhesive from concrete.

Krystle,

Welcome to the forums.

What is underneath the carpet??

twelvepole mentioed concrete, but I'm thinking it could be wood just as easily. If so, and the carpet is repeatedly getting that soaked, the wood would be mush.

In that case, you are probably looking at a total replacement of the porch.

I just bought a house with a screened-in porch with BLUE industrial carpet on it. Thanks for the info about De Solv It. I know there is concrete under the carpet. The old owners were SO PROUD that they had just put new carpet on their porch for the sale!!!! (And did a great job too---LOTS of adhesive---not just around the edges!)

WHAT about vacuuming an outdoor porch is better than sweeping it????

You can vacuum outdoor carpet. A wet/dry vacuum would likely be best, especially if carpet gets wet. Sweeping outdoor carpet with a broom can be done. This might be tedious if sweeping debris like pine needles, grass clippings, etc. The vacuum would pull the debris out of the fibers.
