Care for pressure treated pine (prevent splits)

Hello all,

I am looking for care instructions for pressure treated pine I will be using soon to build a pergola. I was told it tends to crack and split, something I really wish to avoid.

Someone suggested using linseed oil before varnishing the wood. This should prevent the wood from drying out and future cracks.

Any ideas about whether this is good or not?

Cheers
Ronen

Paint [preferably stain] will help to prevent or atleast minimize the cracks... but coatings won't stick well until the PT has dried. The drying process is mostly what causes the cracks.

I don't recall ever using linseed oil on PT lumber. Wood coated with linseed oil tends to mildew quicker.I would not use varnish/poly on the exterior [except protected doors]

I would suggest going to your local paint store for advice and to buy your coatings. They will be more familiar with what works best in your region - most of my painting experience is in the S.E. USA.
