Wood chairs

I am building outdoor chairs out of #2 Pine (untreated). My plans call for painting them with good primer and exterior paint when complete. Is there a staining option with the untreated wood? I'd rather have them a natural or a green stain color now that I am into the project.

How much weather will these chairs be exposed to?

A deck/siding stain could be used but may not give enough protection. An interior wiping stain followed by several coats of a spar urathane will do a good job of protecting the wood but the urathane will deteriate if exposed to a lot of weather.

They will get a lot of weather - they will be left outside all year long in TN without any cover. I'm thinking I may take the risk with an outdoor penetrating stain.

Be sure you completely coat all the wood, including the bottom of the legs.

I'm sorry, but #2 pine will last maybe one year out in the weather!!!!

Why not use cedar or pressure treated pine: Either will last ten times longer. These can be treated with an oil base water repellant stain with uv protection. Spar urethane will be cracking/peeling in less than one year.
