Deck addition

The house I moved into last year has a neglected deck. I am planning on replacing most of the boards and railings. On top of that I would like to build an addition which includes a submerged hot tub.

Do/should I need the deck addition to be attached to the existing deck? If so, how would I do this? The way I am thinking about designing the deck the joists will run perpendicular to the existing joists.

The new portion will have footings and it will have a step to get to the new portion of the deck. I am hoping it can just be floating - with the 2 platforms separately built.

Thank you in advance -

-Bob

The 2 sections can be independent of each other. Your new secction will be free-standing.

If the height works out right, the best way to achieve the 'submerged hot tub' would be to install it on a slab or tub pads.
