Carriage bolts for pergola

I'm still planning my pergola. I will use 6x6 PT posts set in concrete. I want to attach 2x8 cross pieces to the posts using 1/2" carriage bolts. Is that acceptable? I can't get much help from my local building inspector. Thanks in advance.

First, I wouldn't set the wood posts in the concrete. Use column bases (Simpson CBSQ66's) set in the top of the footings and attach the posts in those.

For the 2X8 cross peices, either notch each side of each post so that one of the 2X8's sits in each of the notches then through bolt the two cross pieces to the 2" piece left in the center of the post, OR cut the posts off a little shorter and set the 2X8's on top of the posts using a Simpson BCS2-3/6 for the attachment. (You'll need a short piece of 2X8 between the two cross pieces at the top of each post since the BCS2-3/6 is sized to hold three 2X's on top of a 6X6 post.)

Two bolts per location. Staggered, 1 1/2" from top & bottom, 1 1/2" in from the edge. Don't forget the washer.
