Are there any rules or norms on how wide deck stairs can be? I am renovating part of my deck that used to be around an above ground pool, and we're planning 8' wide stairs to go into the backyard. I know there are rules that they can't be too narrow, but how about too wide?
Are there any special considerations I need to take into account when building stairs this wide? They are about 3' off of the ground.
Also, I read of a design where you make the top stair really wide, but the remaining steps narrower - how would you pull this off?
Thanks.

Some localities require a separate balustrade/handrail down the middle of stairs more than 6' wide. If you trip and you are in the middle, you will fall before you can grab something safe if they are too wide without a separate handrail. However, in your case being only 3' off the deck, you may have an exemption.

Easy to install deck stairs.
If you use an adjustable stair bracket system to build your deck stairs, you can go up to 7' wide.
