Free-standing deck in MA, do I need permit
Hello,
I'm considering building a 10 x 20 free-standing platform deck on the side of our house, as low to the ground as possible. I found the MA building code/requirements for outside decks but was wondering if there are any exceptions for free-standing, low to the ground decks. Do the same requirements apply? All I'm really trying to do is build a wooden platform which could be seen as temporary structure since not attached to the house.
Thanks,
Dertef

I doubt in any state you can alter the footprint of a house without a permit. Your best source is the local building department and permit person. Be prepared with drawings, etc. so you can make one trip do it. Building departments don't see any revenue producing addition to your house as "temporary", believe me.

Unless this sat completely on top of the ground such that people could pick it up and move it, I see it being deemed permanent.
