Question about steps
#1

My friend and I have just built our first deck as a weekend project for his sister. All looks great except we are at the point that he assumed I knew how to build steps and I assumed he did. Neither of us do. The deck is approximately 2 1/2' high and the steps need to reach out about 4' to clear some stuff. i.e. mud.... How do I figure out how to design the stringers? I know what they look like but have no idea how to lay them out to cut them. BTW We want to use 2x8's for the stringers because that's what we have left over from my board recipe which I bought like a ton too much of. hehehe We also have 1x6's for the steps or 2x4's whichever works. HeLp!!!!

Tough question to answer without pictures. I'll do my best.First, divide your height equally. If your height is 30" then your best rise would be 6". You now have 5 risers at 6". If you have to go out 4' then each step will have to be at least 1' wide. Now you have 5 risers at 6" and four steps at 12". Those are the measurements to use on your framing square. We'll talk about nosing on your next set of stairs.

Hello
2x8 is a little small th cut stair horses out of..but you can get Simpson hardware you install on the side of the stair horse rather tahn cuting in...you should double up the 2x8 and use 2x for the ssteps, they should be no less than 3' wide and have a hand rail on both side for safty If you go wider than 3' you need to install a center stair horse you could cut it out of the 2x8 but the not would only come under the step 4-5 inches and if the deck is 30" high hope you have a gard rail around the deck..

Hello
If you use Simpson Hardware and do not cut a stair horse you Can use 2x8, I t seems some do not thing you can but a 2x9 with simpson hardware is stronger than any 2x12 cut stair horse. If there was only one way to do things we would all be living in caves....
get a Simson or catalog and find what you need to atach the treds to the 2x8 stringers, It has been done for years and will be done when needed..Good Luck
