Question Best Sealant Type for Pressure-Treated Wood Deck?

Hi All,
Just spent a small fortune building a 550sq ft deck and want to be sure to protect this investment once the wood has cured.

What is the best SEALANT TYPE to use? I spoke with Cabots and they have three options:

1. Semi-Solid
2. Semi-Transparent
3. Clear Wood Protector

The priority is protecting the wood. UV protection is important as well since the deck gets a lot of southern sun. If need be, I don't mind more frequent treatments of the sealant if it provides superior coverage.

Which one should I go with?

Solid body stains tend to offer the longest lasting protection but they obscure the grain almost as much as paint. I like semi-transparent on a new deck, switching to solid body when it's aged.

Hi Mitch17!

You hit the nail on the head for me. I'm torn because the semi-transparent shows the grain, but the semi-solid probably offers greater UV protection. (Spoke with Cabots and they implied it was by a fact of x2.)

How many years out would the wood properly age when you'd switch to semi-solid?

It's mostly based on how the wood looks to me - when I don't think it looks good any more, I cover it more thoroughly.

Mitch17, what brands/makes would you recommend for a clear or semi-transparent PTW sealant?

Cabot, Sikkens and Benjamin Moore tend to get the most endorsement here.

Ok, let me try again - the internet went out during my last attempt

I wouldn't put my name [reputation] on any clear deck sealer! If I must use an almost clear deck coating I'll use a toner or translucent stain. I agree that semi-transparent is the best choice for a new deck. Like Mitch, I switch to a solid stain when the deck warrants it - usually the last third of the deck's life. A lot depends on how well the deck was maintained and how much weather it receives.

SuperDeck is another deck stain with a good reputation. I've had good results with SWP's DeckScapes. Generally the stain's price is a good indication of it's quality.
