Hello...with spring coming, I know it's time to re-finish my sorry looking deck. Here's my problem: the center of the deck is very high-traffic - there is a well-worn path straight to the door. The side portions are much less worn. How can I refinish and acquire consistent and even color on the 'path', the sides, and the rails? Thanks!

Lefty, the 'path' I am talking about is just the finish worn off; the wood itself is in good shape. My question is: How can I achieve a uniform color when it is so unevenly worn to begin with. Thanks.

If you know exactly what finish was applied to the deck last time, reapplying THAT will be your best bet. All good deck finishes have a sealer in them. In your high traffic ares, that sealer is worn off. In the low traffic areas, it isn't. Because of this sealer being present in some areas, but not in others, getting a consistant color with a new finish will be next to impossible, unless, of course, you want to sand the entire surface down to bare wood.
