Deck Footings Question

Trying to determine the size I need for my footings. It is essentially all clay. I know they need to be 42" deep, I just need the diameter.

Any help would be appreciated!

I would recommend 12" sonotubes. It will take approximately 5 bags of quickrete to fill each one to the depth you mention, maybe a little less. Then use Simpson Strongtie post bases for your 6x6 posts. Here's some helpful information for you to work on. http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf

Edit: I note you are in Minnesota. You may need to use elephant feet for your footings. Check with the local authorities to see what they will be expecting when they inspect it.

Thanks Chandler

I pulled plans off of Decks.com and they have:

16" 22" 22" 16"

16" 12"

I also used a couple of calculators that were getting me up in the 20" range for the middle footings.

Is this overkill by decks.com and the calculators to cover themselves?

Not sure of what the numbers mean in your post #3, but look on page 9 table of the reference I quoted. It will give you footing diameter based on your beam length and joist length.

Chandler,

Those were the recommended footing sizes for each footing I have in the picture below in order.

I will check out the table.
