shade structure with metal roof

I have built a 12x12 shade structure on our deck that we are going to put metal roofing on. The rafters are on 16" centers. Do I need to use purlins or can I attach the metal directly to the rafters? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you go with purlins every 4' or so, and cap them with contoured wooden cap members to match the roofing material's contours, the roofing metal will perform better and be less likely to clatter in the wind. Especially if you've chosen to use thinner gauge roofing metal.

I don't think 4' spacing is close enough, I would think 2' spacing would be the max, I generally go with 16" Will this roof ever be walked on?

No roof will not be walked on, but I do believe I will space them at 2', just for the ease of screwing the metal down.

I probably should have explained better will you need to get on the roof at a later date to paint, clean gutters, etc. Generally when you have to get up on those types of roof if there isn't enough support you have to use a walkboard on the roof, sometimes even add extra support.
