deck beam/support

Which method is recommended for support beam to post attatchments for decks .I have seen some with the beam directly on top of the support, some with support notched out with side of post still beside beam and the older method of using bolts to the sides of the posts also.does it depend on size and location of post?
It is on a free standing 24 by 12ft deck
any info or additional tips appreciated.

Not knowing what size post you are using, nor the size of the beams, not how high it is off the ground, it would be difficult for us to tell right off. Here's some information that is spot on when building a deck. It covers it all. http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf

it is only about 16 inches off ground and 4 by 4 post .I was going to put a additional support beam in middle using 2 by 8.
