cantilever flush beam?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I haven't found a specific answer. I'm wondering if it's ok to cantilever a flush beam over a post/footer instead of the post/footer attaching at the corner. I figured you'd treat it the same way as a drop beam, but have not found anything saying one way or the other, and it's something I'm considering doing.

Anyone have experience with this?

All help appreciated!

I am not sure what you are asking, and although pictures would help, you may not be at that stage yet. Here is basically what you can and cannot do, with local exceptions, of course. http://www.awc.org/publications/dca/dca6/dca6-09.pdf
