Free Standing Porch and Brick Veneer

Being that my house is veneer brick on the front I am looking at building my front porch as free standing. I am confused as to how the roof of the deck will match up with the side of the house. I do not want my porch sitting 6 inches from my house, I want the porch roof to somehow block the elements so doesn't it have to be attached and flashed to the veneer somehow? Can it be attached and flashed just with the weight of the roof being held by the 4x4 or 6x6 supports at the house?

If you want free-standing, it will be difficult to get a weather-proof connection at the roof lines. I would design the porch roof to blend in with and attach to the existing roof line, such that it wouldn't even look like an addition.

If you'd include a few pix of the house, showing where you plan to build the porch, we could provide more meaningful suggestions.
