Question

We are building a deck over and past an existing concrete patio. Off of the patio there is plenty of clearance for 2x6's on end for joists, however, next to the house the combined height of the 2 x 6 Joist plus the decking material (2 x 6) is far to high for the 2 doorways that lead to the patio. We've considered furring (spelling!!) strips across the patio, but that would impede drainage.
We've considered using 2 X 4's on end instead of the 2 x 6's but the problem is the same - too high for the doorways.

A step up is not an option at this time.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

If the concrete is too high to allow you to build the deck over it and have the deck boards come out below the thresholds of the doors, remove the concrete. See the thread started by sdevlin; they have a similar problem.

We ended up. . .

. . .just using the furring strips. I would have liked to pull the concrete out as Lefty suggested, but there just wasn't enough time (this was a suprise for our neighbor's husband)
We'll be screwing the planks down tonight!
Thanks for your suggestions.
