Planning rooftop deck in Long Beach, CA

I recently bought a condo in Long Beach, CA and would like to build a rooftop deck since there is no yard.

It is a flat roof, and stairs would have to be built up. There are three total units and the other two owners are very interested in having rooftop decks built as well.

I don't know where to begin with this task... should I start with looking into what permits are required with the city? Or speak with contractors and go with what they say (yes, I realize the irony of asking about hiring contractors on Or something else entirely? If anyone has done something like this before and has advice on where to even start, I would appreciate it!

Welcome to the forums! Hiring professionals for certain jobs is certainly a way to go if you feel the need. We do advocate DIY whenever possible. I would start by hiring a structural engineer to see if the roof system could take the additional weight of a deck above. Posting pictures here would help us see what you see and we may can give some good advice based on that.

IF california's like ga/sc, condo work is classified as commercial therefore requires arch/pe stamp'd drawings AND licensed commercial-level general contractor to pull the permit,,, you'll likely have to obtain permission from the hoa & submit to inspections, too,,, this takes it our of the diy-class work
