Question What is the best way to avoid weed

We are putting a deck in backyard and I have read negative reviews about week blocker or landscape fabric .... can we use gravel for the purpose of weed control?

If yes what size gravel? or it does not matter?

You can, but it has to be thick... like 3-4" thick.

There are hebicides that will sterilize the ground and also provide a barrier to prevent seeds from germinating. In some cases you can get up to one year protection with a single application. You have to follow the directions carefully as a rain at the wrong time can wash it into your yard.

What bad information have you received regarding weed block or Typar?? Typar in conjunction with gravel will keep growth to a minimum. A yearly spraying around the edges will keep it neat.

Are you talking about controlling weeds under the deck? How tall is the deck? If it's low to the ground it will block enough sun to keep most stuff from growing.

Gravel works for a while, but eventually enough organic matter accumulates between the stones for weeds to sprout. Same thing happens with landscape fabric, especially if you mulch over it. Nevertheless, a few inches of gravel over landscape fabric is probably as good as it gets.
