For 5/4x6 deck boards the reccomended placement is 16" O.C. - maximum

Not sure on max, but my inspector told me 18" OC was fine for 5/4.

The xtra 2" probably wouldn't make much, if any difference as far as load bearing or "springyness" of the deck is concerned, but it sure would create the potential for a lot of wasted 5/4 board.

16" on center runs out even every 4', i.e. 8',12' and 16' work out right on the joist. At 18", nothing works out even, unless you're using 9' boards...

Matt,

Never built a deck before, but will be this summer. Trying to learn as much as possible. What is 5/4 ?

Thanx, Bill

It's just an alternative to using 2x6 for decking. Same wood, but instead of 2x6 it's 1 1/4x6, hence 5/4 (five-quarter). Finished thickness is 1 inch instead of 1 1/2. There are two grades of it, and here is MD the grade 2 (same as 2x6) is cheaper than 2x. 5/4 has more rounded edges, too. You can also get a premium grade that's really nice, no knots or anything. It's more expensive, though.

5/4 isn't as strong as 2x, but if your joists are on 16" you'll never notice. I've never build with it but I will this summer, hopefully June. Check it out at your local building store, I'm sure they've got it.

Matt
