Paint/Staining 30 year old deck
I'm starting the process of re-doing my 30 year old deck. It is about 1800 sq feet of wood, with 20% covered by a roof. The rest of it is open to the elements, and since the house was abandoned for 5 years, it is in poor condition. It was at one point painted, but most of it is chipped away. some boards need to be replaced as well.
I'm wondering if I should paint it again, which will most certainly peel in the winter, or go with a semi-transparent or solid stain.
I'm assuming either way, I would have to strip the paint that is already on it?

Remove all the loose paint you can, clean it and apply a solid body stain.
At least that's what I would do. Might be a little sandpaper in there as well after the cleaning but I'm not there to see it.

You need to clean it up and repair as needed first anyway before you can state for sure which coatings will work best - I'm betting that a solid deck stain will be the best way to go.
