Repairing Stone Steps

I have stone steps leading up to my front door. They appear to be made of a solid cement type of mix with a covering or facing of a softer white material that looks almost like stucco. I attached a picture.

The white covering material is falling off. I want to remove it and re-fininsh the steps in a way that will look good and have them last.

Can someone advise me on the best way to do this?

Thanks a lot, Upstate John

You should be able to chisel it off of the risers and then apply a thinner coat of stucco to dress it up.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I was thinking of maybe facing it with stone for a better look. After chipping the stucco off, what adhesive would I use to attach stone? Is there a particular kind of stone face that would be good for this? I wouldn't need much for the two steps.

Thanks, Upstate John.

I'm a painter, not a mason but I believe you just use mortar to attach the stone to the risers. The biggest thing to remember when getting the stone is to make sure it's thin enough so it still leaves an overhang on the tread above it.
