What kind of fastener should we use?

Putting new cedar board deck ....

5-1/4 size

I read somewhere that it should be either polymer coated or stainless steel or aluminum

what is your preference among above options?

and what is the size of screws should we use for deck? we won't use nails of course..

We are going to put stain on cedar..preferably semi transparent

I would use cedar colored decking torx screws. Deck Mate #10 3 in. Star Flat-Head Wood Deck Screws (5 lb.-Pack)-734968 - The Home Depot

Size will depend on the thickness of your decking. You want at least 1/2 of your screw to penetrate your joisting. So it it is 2x lumber you want to use 3" screws. 5/4 lumber you would use 2 1/2" or 2".

Stainless steel screws will cam out to easily, and you will need a new vocabulary to describe it. Aluminum will deteriorate in contact with pressure treated lumber below, so coated decking screws will give the best life and won't cam out.
