Attach umbrella to outside of the deck

I have an umbrella with a base that looks like this :

Name: base.jpg
Views: 1401
Size: 47.6 KB

I'd like to attach it to the outside of the deck/railing. I was thinking of getting a small section of 6x6, about 18 inches or so to span 2 joists (the umbrella base is 5 inches wide, is a 6x6 ok?), attaching the 6x6 to the outside of the base of the deck using lag screws into 2 joists. Then I can mount the base on top of the 6x6 with bolts for winter removal.... is this an appropriate way to mount it?

Thanks!

A stronger way to do it would be to mount it inside the railing. Put the 6x6 between 2 joists, under the deck, against the bottom of the decking. Then mount the base through the decking, into the 6x6.

Thanks for the reply Pulpo. I should have mentioned I have a Trex deck and ideally don't want to drill through it if possible!

You can mount it the way that you described. I just wanted to give you a stronger alternative.
