Pressure treated joist vs stained non treated joist

We are building deck and wondering if can we use a non treated 2x6 with good stain like thompson water seal or similar ... may be pressure treated is best but price is more than double so wondering if stained non treated can be ok?

Use pressure treated wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Good stain" and "Thompsons water seal" don't usually go together in the same sentence. They have great marketing, though.

There is no substitute for PT wood! It's cheaper in the long run. Unstained it will likely last longer than any pine no matter how well it is kept sealed/coated. TWS does a good job but has a very short life span - often 6 months or less

One more vote for pressure treated and not using Thompsons anywhere ever.
