Attach joist to ledger

We are building an enclosed three season room on existing deck sheathed in 3/4 plywood. The edge of three season room is between joists so I wanted to add three more joists within one 16inch joist space for support under walk and for deck nailing purposes. However very difficult to attach joist hanger with nails, but can easily drive screws in. My question is for this application, can you use screws to attach joist to ledger? If so what type? 3 inch decking screws or something more substantial and if so what?

Use the appropriate size structural screw, based on the specs for your hanger.

I used the suggested string drive screws as space too tight for nails. However I was surprised that the box of HDG 10D common nail recommended by Home Depot and stocked right next to joust hangers was only 1.5 inches long. I was told everyone uses these for joist hangers. I was expecting to use a 3 inch nail but perhaps overkill.

The Simpson website tells you what sort of nail to use where with each particular hanger... they are all different. Some require 8d, some 10D, some 12d, some 16d. You have to read the directions.
