Question on how to notch wood properly

Hello!

I am in need of help. I have attached two photos of what I am trying to achieve. I am looking to put a notch in the middle of a piece of wood that is a certain depth but specifically that is about 5/8s of an inch wide. I tried the table saw but it was messy and not consistent as the blade is too thin. Is there a tool I could use that would do this better? Do table saws have blades that are 5/8s of an in thick? That would make the job much quicker!

Thanks so much for your help!Name: IMG_1481.jpg

You need a dado blade. See link below. The link is to a typical "cheap" blade, if you look at the links you can shop for more expensive blades. The cheap one will do what you want if you are not looking for a furniture quality cut.

Sears.com

You will have to purchase a new throat plate, which is the plastic insert around the blade and they are interchangeable, such as dado, standard, and zero clearance.

That is exactly what I needed! Thank you. I just watched this YouTube video which explained Dado Cuts and it's perfect. Thanks!
