Looking for opinions on deck stairs/patio configuration

All,

Home currently under construction, and builder wondering what we want to do deck steps and patio. Looking for any thoughts/comments from you pros!

I'm not looking for anything extravagant or aspirational... mainly looking for thoughts on what to do.

Kept getting an error when uploading the photo, so I have to link it here: https://goo.gl/photos/vF5ydXjz33JYGH2s6

The deck is being extended 4 ft. (you can see that on the house). One thought is that the area on the house be turned into a landing at the top of the stairs, then the stairs extend downward away from the house. I don't like this because all you see from that basement window is the underside of a staircase. Another thought is that you extend the deck outward to create that landing area on the "yard" side of the deck (next to the post), then the stairs go down to the left. Then patio is roughly 12x12 square with a small landing area at base of stairs that ties to larger patio.

Hopefully some of that rambling makes sense. Appreciate it!

I would want the stairs as close to the sliding glass doors. More importantly, what footings are under those posts? They should be 12" diameter & 4' deep in your area.

Fair point. Could slide the top landing back adjacent to the house then the stairs don't extend beyond the perimeter of the deck.

I guess I didn't look at the footings, but you also can't see them on the photo. Were you just cautioning, or did you see something that led you to believe they weren't adequate?

What do you value more, deck or patio? If it was me (I'm a deck man) I would turn the deck out at a 45 degree angle from the main support beam and take the deck into a larger octagonal deck that extends to the end of the house. The stairs to the backyard are to the right of the slider. Split levels are tough as you are partially buried underground in your first floor. There are waterproofing systems to make the under belly of the deck more pretty to look at, keep water off the patio and give you a versatile space. Issue with the patio, is that you have to access it from the second floor. Would be much easier to have the main entertainment area at the level of the slider and deck.
