Patio Cover Help

I have a 10x16w patio slab that I'd like to cover with a basic patio cover. I have shopped the aluminum ones and have been looking online at some wood plans. I'm considering buying an aluminum kit, can anyone tell me if this is difficult to install? I am worried because I have a 2 story house and im afraid to drill through siding to install the horizontal support. I'd like to save some money and do it myself. The county I live in charges 600$ for a permit for a 160 sq ft patio cover...which I feel is absurd. thanks!

It's hard to comment on how hard it is to install something without knowing what kit you are considering. In general it will require some basic tools like good ladders, drills and probably wrenches and will require some work. You'll probably need a helper as many of the pieces will probably be too long for one person to handle alone. As for the permit costs they vary by location but $600 does seem high. In my area you'd also possibly need a zoning permit.
