Is this a 30 or 45 deg miter cut?

I'm replacing a rotted 2x4 on deck stairs. Name: DSCN3009sm.jpg

I have to miter box cut the longer piece, the one in the foreground that leads to a mitered corner on the right. Is it a 30 or 45 degree cut? Hard for me to tell.

Two 45's make a 90. So I'm assuming if you are talking about the miter joint on the stair tread, that would be a 45.

Thanks--it's just that I thought it might be 60-30, one angle looks sharper to me, but that could be because the widths of the two different pieces are different.

Well if the thickness is different, all bets are off.... it could be 60-30. They look the same thickness in the picture. Don't you have a sliding t bevel?

Thanks, no don't have that tool, not a carpenter. Angle of photo makes it hard to distinguish the widths.

Well they are like $5-10, you might get one next time you are at the box store. Handy for duplicating / finding angles.

Take the board you're replacing and scribe the angle to the new board. That way you know it will be the same.

If it were 60-30, one cut would be longer than the other one. Simple Pythagorean Theorem. Both cuts must be the same to prevent it.

If trim boards are different widths, cut corners as follows. On the wider board, the angle cut is from the outside corner to the point on the inside that is the width of the narrower board. On the narrower board, the angle cut is from the outside corner to the point on the inside that is the width of the wider board. Good luck
