Angry Porch steps warping

Twice now I’ve installed new stair treads on my exterior wood porch steps only to have them “cup” or “curl” along the front edge. I painted/stained both times. The last treads were purchased from Lowes. Inch thick with underside scored with grooves along the length. What am I doing wrong?

What size and type of wood is it? Most exterior treads use 1x6 or 2x6 PT lumber. You look at the end grain and lay them so the crown is up. Treads wider than 8" generally split easily and can warp.

How far do the treads overlap the risers and how did you fasten the treads?

Did you paint both sides and all edges of the tread before you installed them? Painting/staining both faces helps equalize the drying rate of the lumber and can help resist cupping.
