New patio construction questions

Hello, This is a first time post and I am sorry if it has been posted before, and that it is a pretty stupid question. I am looking to build a patio in an area that is 20ft by 20ft. I plan on digging out the are and lining with a landscaping fabric. Do you recommend the black landscape fabric or the burlap landscaping fabric. I am doing this as the area previously was covered by weeds and a large mimosa tree. I then plan on pouring gravel and sand. However I was told that just one or the other would be fine, as well as was told that I could lay the pavers on the fabric/dirt without adding gravel. Is this recommended? I then am looking at how many pavers I would need. The garden center told me I would need about 50 18x18 pavers to fill the area, but I feel I may need more. Would anyone know the exact amount? Also do you suggest the 18x18 pavers ($5.50 per piece) or 12x12 (1.56 per piece) or is it merely just a matter of convenience. Is there any difference in brick face or the flat face pavers or is it just aesthetics? Is there anything else I need to know?

Thank you so much for all of your help

Welcome to the forums.

I can help you with the hard part.... the counts.

178 18"x18" would be needed for 20'x20' ($980)
400 12"x12" would be needed for 20'x20' ($625)
400sq feet.

You should be using 4" of gravel and 1" of sand over that. Well compacted.

Make sure the 'gravel' is a material which will compact and then compact it well with a 1/4" per foot of run slope away from the house before adding the 1" layer of bedding sand.

Thank you very much! Went with 15x10 to save on materials and to keep it a bit easier as it is my first time! Thanks again!
