base for patio
Quick and to the point. I have 2-4" of sand down in the square i dug up for a patio and need to add more material so my patio is above ground level.
A) dig up sand put in gravel then sand (I've seen everywhere that gravel is first then sand)
B) put gravel on top or mix with sand
C) put dirt on top of sand then gravel
My base will be tamped down before the patio is put on it.

I would remove the existing sand down to hard, virgin soil. Then backfill with compacted crushed stone for your base. Then screed out an inch of sand on top for your pavers.

The compacted stone (limestone is my preferred) is the base and allows for water drainage. The sand is really just the final layer to level the area for pavers. Too much sand and it will have a tendency to shift since it is not compacted and the pavers will go right along for the ride.
