Porch posts
I am trying to understand why on a covered porch do the posts/columns that support the roof sit on top of the flooring? Is this code, is it just a design feature, etc.?
I am replacing the existing wood flooring/decking of my porch with composite decking and having a difficult time finding a base/bracket to secure the bottom of the 4x4 post to.
Thank you

Generally speaking, a weight-bearing post or column should not be sitting on the flooring product.
Can you post a picture of this?

There are no codes that I am aware of, its simply the construction method that gets used most often. The columns get replaced now and then. They are often just toenailed.

Here's a pic of the porch when I was about halfway done with removing the flooring. It maybe difficult to see, but the posts were nailed into the flooring.

Please note: There are many other issues going on here that I'd like to ignore for the purposes of this discussion. I'm concentrating on the posts for right now and am addressing the other various issues.
Also...I did not build, nor contract for this porch. We purchased the home a couple years ago and the porch has been there for some time.

Apparently they don't need a lot of lateral support. You could just rebuild the same way it was built originally.
