Question Attaching stair rails, balusters, handrail to deck

Still smashing fingers on the deck replacement. Now I need advice on attaching the vertical rails to the posts. I used brackets for the ends on the deck but looking for the best way to attach the vertical 2x4s to the post. I also read that for code I need a handrail and not just the horiz rail cap 2x?

I'm using composite material, and I have some 6' 2x4s for the stairs. The posts are white plastic. Should I attach the vert 2x on the inside of the post? I saw some vinyl stair rail connectors but they look ugly.

The style is this...

During the board transition... the normal picture inserting is not working. You need to attach images and they appear at the bottom of your post. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html Follow attaching instructions in red box.

Confusing, do you mean the HORIZONTAL rails (upper and lower) to the posts?

yes, understand the confusion. they are horizontal but are turned edgeways for the angled cut to attach to the post. Putting in a screw near the bottom of the rail into the post is not much for strength, and I guess I should put in a couple more screws angled in from the side? but that starts looking messy unless I do a nice countersink or pocket hole?

You can also use the baluster as your cleat. Your image in post one shows a baluster against the post. You could basically assemble the entire thing then fit it between the posts, and put a few screws through the end balusters into the posts. Not that you wouldn't want other fasteners in it. A single toe screw underneath (in post 5) would suffice.

yeah, baluster as a cleat... can't see the forest for the trees sometimes. That's why I post here. Sorry for the horz and vertical confusion, but I should have just posted the pic right off. So what do you call a horiz 2x4 that is turned 90 degrees? lol
