Extend Rim Joist to support stringer

The rim joist where I want to attach the stair stringers is made up of a 2x10 on the outside and a 2x8 on the inside.I was going to use carriage bots to attach a 4x4 to the back of the existing rim joist and extend the rim joist down by 8i with an 8in wide board on the outside and a 10in wide board on the inside. That would give me 18in to support the stringer. THe stairs are 40in wide.

Is 2 4x4 supports sufficient? How many lag bolts per support? one per 2x10 or 2x8 or should I use 2?

Since my steps will be about 7in does the rim joist need to be 18 " wide or is 16 sufficient?

Hopefully my description has enough info.
