Portico - looking for guidance

Hello,

I'd like to build a small portico (small pitched roof over front door) of my house. Does anyone have a good step-by-step process and considerations for doing this against vinyl siding? I have vinyl siding, is the best practice to cut away the siding based on the designed frame? And then how to go about waterproofing the part where the frame meets the vinyl?

Thank you in advance

Way more to it to do it right then you may think.
Got a picture of where you want the roof and an idea what style roof you want? (Gable, shed)
Siding needs to come off the wall no matter what style roof you want, not just cut.
Roof gets installed with flashing running up the wall (what type flashing depends on what style roof)] J molding at least 1" above the shingles, then recut the siding to fit.
