Placing floating deck blocks
I cannot find anything consistent online on how to place deck blocks for a floating deck. Whether or not what I have done matches code is up to your building inspectors, but the deck I built (in upstate NY) stood fine for 15 years. I'm getting ready to build another now, so here are my conclusions based on latest web research:
1. Load less than 1700 psf per block
2. Place blocks directly on surface; no need to dig or create gravel base unless on slope
3. On slopes, dig and set block such that upper corner is level with lower corner
4. Keep deck height below 3 feet
5. Do not attach to structure; maintain 1/2" space between building and deck
6. Verify everything with local codes
If there are errors here, please update and correct for my and others edification

You can only use deck blocks if you live someplace where there is no inspection. Even then, it might come back to haunt you when you go to sell and your house (and deck) is inspected for the potential buyer.
