I am attaching a ledger to my house. I will be removing the siding to expose the sheathing. I will be attaching a 2x10 ledger onto the header joist of the house. My question is what size lag screws should I use? I'm thinking 0.5x4.5 inch lag screw.

Also, is it OK that the lag screw actually penetrates the header so that it could be seen from inside the basement(i.e. will it lose it's gripping strength)? I can't use carriage bolts because the basement ceiling is drywalled.

Thanks.

put two lag screws every two feet in V shaped pattern

just watch how far they penetrate you don't want to hit any plumbing or electrical lines that may be behind the framework

go with size relative to how much wood you are going through ie 2 2x use 3 3 2x 4.5 inch etc

predrill a hole one size smaller than the bolt size ie 1/2 bolt make 3/8 hole for easier tightening

hope this helps---josh
