Hi,

I have a deck that is 18x14. I am using 2x10's for the joists and for the beams(2-2x10's). I have 4x6 posts. I would like attach the beam to the posts by cutting out a 3 inch by 9.25 inch notch and rest the 2-2x10's in the notch. Since the posts are 5.5 x 3.5, and the 3.5 inch section will face the house, this should leave 2.5 inches of the post leftover. Then, attach 1.5 x 8 inch carriage bolts throught this 2.5 inch section and through the beam.

Is this better than sandwiching the beams together on either side of the post? It sure seems like more work.

Thanks.

Why all of the notching? Just put a Simpson column cap (CC3-1/4X4 or CC3-1/4X6) on top of the post and run the double 2X beam through it. Then bolt it all together.

Lefty is right. Simpson Strong-Tie Products are available at Home Depot, Lowes, and most Building Supply businesses.
