FIll paver joints

In the freezing north, is the polymer joint filler best to use between pavers or is colored sand fine?

They both work. I find that the polymeric sand lasts longer but it's a more involved process to install and is more difficult to "freshen" when the time comes. With sand heavy rain and leaf blowers can wash some of it away and it is more prone to grow weeds but you just brush it on and when it needs to be refreshed you just brush in more sand.
