Question How many lag bolts for box steps?

I'm making box steps out of 4x8 pressure treated lumber with each one sitting on the other down to my driveway 4' below the front step to the house. I'm planning on using 5" x 3/8" lag bolts but not sure if I can get away with 2 for each end or if I should go with 3.
Thanks in advance for your time d;-)>

Unless I'm not understanding you, that sounds like a very bad way to make steps.

What is the actual measured thickness of the material ?
If it's 4"...... I'd use at least three lag bolts.

So 4x8 is actually closer to 3 1/2 x 7 1/2 so 5" lag's only get into the wood 1 1/2.

If I were building I'd use (2) 3/8 x 8 per joint!

Thanks guys, since I have 6 to make 2 it is and yes, I will go longer on the lag screws but think 8" is too long, maybe 6" which gives a 2.5" bite. They're residential steps that will be filled with maybe pavers at some point but just going wood chips for now.
I was thinking of maybe using galvanized nails on the earth side to save some $$

I would use ledgerloks. And would probably use 3... one down vertically through the ends and 2 back horizontally to tie everything together. But 2 or 3 probably doesn't matter that much.
